I spent the nights of fall and winter of 2017 walking the towns and fringes of the northern Ruhrgebiet and the Emscher valley.
There is an acuteness of hearing and a sense of something larger when visiting those drab and menial places at night. Things, animals and people restricted to the hours of darkness come out and start prowling. The daylight people can be reckoned as dead for a brief period and it really changes the game.
I collected quite a bit of impressions there and maybe it turns into something tangible. Something new is coming to those places and noone knows if it is to fear or to embrace.
„Hexenmacht“, der zweite Band aus der Reihe „Die Krone der Sterne“ von Kai Meyer ist im März zur Leipziger Buchmesse 2018 erschienen.
Wie immer ging dem Band ein Sommer voller Zeichnereien und akribischer Digitalarbeit voran. Viel Arbeit, aber am Ende ist man immer glücklich, ein schönes, geglücktes Buch in der Hand zu haben. Danke auch an die vielen geduldigen Leser und Leserinnen, die auf der Messe für die Signaturen angestanden haben. Ohne Publikum existiert die Welt nicht.
I have started to collect impressions from my nightly ramblings. Most are sketches only, with the occasional dip into further possibilities. There are strange things about on the fringes of the town and I am not so sure if night is only a period of darkness caused by planetary rotation. Night is territory, a land of its own.
„Die Krone der Sterne“ by Kai Meyer has finally been published. I did the artwork, which involved inventions of spacecraft, uniforms and general outline of the baroque looks of the star kingdom of Tiamande. The book itself has a „starter“ of 6+ illustrated spreads, establishing the mood and scene and smoothing the more mundane bibliographic information like ISBN and the certified assurance that no real trees were harmed in the making of the book.
Most of the last year I was poring over new ideas for statues and installations. I took to my sketchbooks and fathomed some of them – just to come to the obvious insight that I always will have to trundle along the basic lines, seeing what comes along while doing it. One of the unpleasant facts of exhibiting work like this is the tendency of people to try and touch. This led me to the idea of incorporating a barrier into the whole concept, glass tubes and other paraphernalia of the laboratory atmosphere from which the original concept comes.
As some may have noticed, I crashed my old word press for good. Instead of tiresome repairs and reconstruction I took the opportunity to set up a new one. It’s got some new fangled stuff like sliders and the like – let’s hope it works on your devices.
There’s a slight change in policy – I don’t intend to have everything on show here. The portfolio will consist of fewer but more recent things – and of course the projects I prefer best.
